My Grand Fathers Family Saavedra

This ancient surname first appears in 698 with Ferrán de Saavedra, who built the Eris castle in the modern parish of Saavedra in Galicia, Spain. The Arias de Saavedra lines spread throughout Latin America, descending principally from Gaspar Arias de Saavedra of Granada and Bernardo Arias de Saavedra of Sevilla during the 1600's.

The name appears several times in documents in New Mexico during the late 1700's and early 1800's. The first was José Salvador Saavedra, who married María de la Luz Cedillo in Santa Fe in 1772. In the following years others were listed in Albuquerque, Atrisco, Sandia, Laguna and Santa Cruz de la Cañada, and at the Nuestra Señora de Belén Mission.
